About This Coffee
Sidama has rapidly become one of the hottest regions in Ethiopia’s coffee scene. Since officially becoming its own federal region in late 2019 after a landmark referendum (with over 98% approval), Sidama has emerged with both political and agricultural significance. It is now one of Ethiopia’s smallest federal regions, bordered by Oromia and separated from the legacy SNNPR region.
In the coffee world, Sidama’s reputation has soared — Cup of Excellence (COE) competitions held since 2020 have seen Sidama claiming champion and runner-up positions three years in a row, with a stunning number of winners hailing from this region.
Since Ethiopia reopened post-pandemic, we've made five trips to Sidama during the 2023 harvest season alone, closely monitoring developments and processing activity across the region. One consistent trend: cherry prices in Sidama have stayed high and continue to rise, outpacing even futures market trends.
Producer Information
The Sidama coffee region can be reached after a five to six-hour drive south from Addis Ababa, arriving at the lakeside city of Hawassa, Sidama’s capital. From there, a further hour along the A8 highway brings you to Yirga Alem. A turn east leads deep into the heart of the coffee-growing highlands.
The Bombe Kebele area, where this lot originates, features processing stations situated above 2,000 MASL, with nearby farms reaching up to 2,200 MASL—a rare elevation in Ethiopia’s southern zones. This high altitude, combined with unique microclimates, delays the harvest season.
Whereas Yirgacheffe may peak in December, Bensa Bombe typically begins harvesting in January and continues well into February. When we visited mid-December, most drying beds were still empty; by early January, some sites had just reached peak operation.
This delayed harvest and exceptional terroir are key reasons Sidama lots consistently excel at COE competitions.
