Farm Profile
Finca Los Placeres is one of the Mierisch family's legacy farms, located in the highlands of Jinotega, Nicaragua. Originally a water-scarce plot, the farm was transformed through a reforestation project that, within four years, enabled it to naturally generate its own water source. This ecological success supported not only the community but also created ideal microclimates for shade-grown specialty coffee.
The farm now cultivates a variety of high-quality Arabica trees under sustainable practices and precise processing protocols—making it one of Nicaragua’s model specialty farms.
About the Producer
The Mierisch family has been producing coffee in Nicaragua for over 100 years. Their story began in the early 1900s when Bruno Mierisch, a German geologist, was compensated with land in lieu of payment for engineering work. He began cultivating coffee on those high-altitude lands in 1908.
Now into the 5th generation, the family includes prominent industry figures like *Dr. Erwin R. Mierisch, **Erwin Jr., and **Eleane, all of whom have served as international coffee judges and innovators. They are known for their award-winning coffees at **Cup of Excellence* and their dedication to innovation, transparency, and quality across their farms in both *Nicaragua and Honduras*.
Processing Method
A signature of the Mierisch family, the *Funky Natural* process involves a unique, *controlled fermentation technique* designed to intensify fruit character while maintaining cup clarity.
*How it works:*
* Cherries are handpicked at peak ripeness and taken directly to the dry mill.
* Spread in *thick layers* on plastic tarps to limit airflow and increase microbial activity.
* *Less frequent turning* (only 3–4 times daily) encourages early fermentation.
* Occasionally misted with water to stimulate further fermentation.
The result is a lively and complex cup with *wild tropical flavors, balanced acidity, and a **structured, clean finish*.
